LONDON (AFP) – A U.S. soldier who accidentally have a slain British aid worker held hostage in Afghanistan during a failed rescue attempt is likely to face disciplinary action, a report said Thursday.
The Special Forces soldier threw a grenade that have slain Linda Norg Rove, who died last Friday in the U.S. rescue bid, told the Guardian newspaper cites sources in Kabul and London.
But the military commanders that he does not have the explosive thrown long after the event about, the newspaper said.
During the assault on the kidnappers’ base, 36-year-old Norg Rove broke away from her kidnappers and lay in a fetal position to avoid damage, told the Guardian.
But the American soldier to see her and threw a fragmentation grenade near where she was hiding and it exploded next to her, said the paper.
Officials had initially said Norg Rove was slain when one of her abductors Taliban blew up a suicide vest – but a review of the operation showed an American grenade could have slain her.
The United States has ordered an investigation into the incident.
The report came as Prime Minister David Cameron was due to meet with the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus, in London later Thursday. They were due to hold talks before the incident.
Cameron said Tuesday the circumstances surrounding the death of the worker still “unclear.”
“The responsibility for the death of Linda’s up with that cowardly, ruthless people who kidnapped her in the first place,” he stressed.
